Our small dog exercise and play area at our Park Ridge pet resort recently underwent a complete make over with the addition of a new tennis court just for dogs.
Often after heavy rain and a lot of use from our canine guests, who get to enjoy plenty of playtime, our normally grassed play areas were too often turning into mud making it uncomfortable particularly for the small dogs. Most dogs love to run around and play on grass but it is next to impossible to maintain in a kennel situation with the wear, so concrete is more practical yet lacks visual appeal.
My local tennis centre had synthetic grass piled up that they needed to get rid of since having to replace some of the tennis courts. I thought we could use and recycle this and create fantastic new play areas for the dogs. When picking up the grass from the tennis centre Alison, one of the coaches who also boards her dog with us, asked “are you installing tennis courts for the dogs?” I jokingly responded saying yes, and the next day I though why not!
Now I know dogs can’t actually play tennis but most dogs love running around and chasing balls. So why not build them a tennis court for some extra fun!
We removed most of the real grass, laid concrete, added a couple of post’s for the net then put the synthetic grass covering most of the concrete leaving a small area of real grass in the middle to see which surface the dogs actually prefer when they get to choose.
Well the results in and the dogs love it, specially playing on the tennis court! We have had many famous players such as Boris Barker, Novak Gotatick, Maria Shitzu-pova and Staffy Graf play on our Dog Laver Arena.
Dogs will often run straight out grab the tennis balls and run around playing chase on the court. Now we can let the dogs play immediately after the rains stops and they remain cleaner and drier because of the new synthetic playing surface, which is much easier to clean and maintain, and looks great.
We believe we are the first pet resort in Australia with a tennis court just for dogs.
Thank you Beenleigh Tennis Club for the grass and thanks to coach Alison for coming up with the idea of building Australia’s first tennis court for dogs! Plans are now under way to renovate and build tennis courts for dogs at our Cornubia pet resort soon.
